China’s Population Crisis | Decline in Birth Rate and Accelerated Population Aging

China is the world's most populous country, at least for now. The first 20 years of the 2000’s have seen 100 million fewer births than the last 20 years of the previous century. By 2022, the mortality rate in China is predicted to exceed the birth rate, China will step from an aging society to a “dying society”.

Under former leader Mao Zedong’s influence, since 1979, The Chinese Communist Party has taken a number of measures that seriously violate human rights to control population, including forced contraception, forced abortions, and female infanticide, and some officials have exploited the population by demolishing homes and confiscating property. These acts reached a climax during the ruling of former CCP leader Jiang Zemin.

According to the Chinese Gynecology and Obstetrics Annual Report, from 2014 to 2015, China performed at least 9 million abortions, which contributed to one-sixth of the total abortion in the world that year, making it the most among all countries. There is also another statistic known to many Chinese people, 13 million abortions in 1995. The large numbers reflected how tragic the situation was.

This has also led to a serious imbalance in the male-to-female ratio in China. In 2005, the ratio of males to females was 118.9 to 100, almost 20% more than females. In 2014, the male-to-female born ratio was 116 to 100, which was not of much improvement.

These crises could affect the CCP's power. On June 19, the CHina Development Foundation released a report on population aging, saying that since 2000, when China entered an aging society, the pace of population aging in China has been accelerating. It predicted by 2022, 14% of China's total population will be over the age of 65.

The aging problem is also worsened by a declining birthrate. If the fertility rate does not increase significantly in the next few years, the annual birth rate in China will inevitably drop to less than 10 million, and the mortality rate will exceed the birth rate.
