Dennis Rodman had a unique ability to guard all 5 positions in his prime. After leaving the Spurs, Rodman focused entirely on post defense, but prior to his Chicago days he truly could guard every position. Despite his relatively small frame for post defense, Rodman still had the strength to push bigger players outside the paint (Robinson, Shaq, Malone), forcing them into tough, contested shots. He also had the agility to keep up with quicker bigs like Hakeem.

At his peak, Rodman could blend his all-time great post defense with all-time great perimeter defense on the top perimeter scorers and all-around players, including Jordan, Magic, and Bird. His lateral quickness, timing, off-ball, and on-ball on the perimeter, as well as in the post, were all exceptional, and he was great at drawing charges in both the paint and perimeter. To this day, Dennis Rodman is the only player in history who could effectively and consistently guard all 5 positions throughout a game.
