As the United States' fight for Greenland heats up, pundits have frequently cited a certain piece of historic foreign policy - the Monroe Doctrine. But what is it exactly?

The US interest in Greenland is driven by competition with China and Russia. In order to justify preventing foreign adversaries from gaining a strategic foothold in the region, Americans have pointed to the 1823 policy, where the security of the Western Hemisphere is enshrined within.
