Hundreds of Israelis March to Demand Universal IDF Enlistment

In a unified display, multiple reservist organizations, including El HaDegel and the Forum of Reservist Wives, launched a march at the Castel National Heritage Site—where critical battles for Israel’s independence once raged. Bereaved mother Laly Derai joined forces with the movement, appealing directly to ultra-Orthodox men to enlist. Tensions flared after Israel’s High Court of Justice in June ordered the IDF to incorporate Haredi youth into its ranks. Around 66,000 men aged 18–24 have thus far avoided service, relying on long-standing exemptions. Despite the IDF’s heightened demand for personnel, the ruling coalition has resisted imposing enlistment on the ultra-Orthodox community, fueling a broader societal debate over national service obligations.
