Prof Eric Morand: The curse of steroids in lupus and a way forward

Professor Eric Morand is head of School of Clinical Sciences (SCS) at Monash Health and a rheumatologist whose research focus is on the glucocorticoid-regulated proteins in inflammatory processes. He describes how the treatment breakthroughs for lupus have been few and far between, and the mechanisms of action of these drugs have to be better understood in order to tailor more effective treatments.
3:37 What is the patient experience in lupus? - Not great
6:36 Timeline of SLE treatments - sparse
7:51 Why no breakthrough treatments for SLE? It's complicated - a lot of targets for pathogenesis of SLE (9:29)
11:38 Steroids induce accelerated organ damage - prolonged use is harmful - alternative treatment is needed
13:29 The glucocorticoid mechanisms of action
26:55 Conclusion
