Apollo 10 came within 8 miles of the Moon — then turned back #Shorts

May 18, 1969: Apollo 10 reached the Moon but never landed.

It was the full dress rehearsal. Everything worked. Thomas Stafford, John Young, and Gene Cernan flew the entire Apollo 11 mission profile. Lunar module separated. They descended to 47,000 feet above the Moon's surface. Close enough to pick landing sites. Then mission control called them home. But here's the part nobody mentions. NASA deliberately underfueled the lunar module ascent stage. Not enough propellant to return to orbit if they landed. The only thing stopping humanity's first Moon landing was a fuel gauge. And three men who had to trust the math.
