Shirley Bassey - CRAZY / S'WONDERFUL (1997 60th Birthday TV Special)
ENHANCED HD VIDEO & AUDIO - (Veteran POP vocalist/entertainer Shirley Bassey celebrates her 60th BD via this TV Special and she performs a wonderful live cover of the Patsy Cline classic hit, Crazy, which was written by Willie Nelson. (Please, no negative comparisons to the wonderful Patsy Cline, who I am a big fan of. Bassey & Cline have completely difference voices, but both are GREAT in their own respective way. I believe that those who take a listen will also like this veteran's version of this classic.)
Shirley recorded and released this song on her 1995 CD titled, 'Shirley Bassey Sings The Movies.' Shirley has recorded only a few country songs in her 59+ year & counting career, but she always wanted to record this one because it is one of her favorites.
LYRICS:
Crazy
Crazy for feeling so lonely
I'm crazy
Crazy for feeling so blue
I knew, you'd love me as long as you wanted,
And then someday, you'd leave me for somebody new
Worry
Why do I let myself worry?
Wondering
What in the world did I do?
Crazy
For thinking that my love could hold you
I'm crazy for trying
Crazy for crying
And I'm crazy for loving you
Worry
Why do I let myself worry?
Wondering
What in the world did I do?
Crazy
For thinking that my love could hold you
I'm crazy for trying
Crazy for crying
And I'm crazy for loving you
Crazy
ABOUT Shirley Sings The Movies:
In 1995 Shirley Bassey signed a deal with the PolyGram TV label, she recorded and released two albums with the label. The first was a themed album of movie songs. The songs were personally selected by Bassey for the album, and are a diverse range of ballads and pop classics, some were originally composed for original soundtracks, but several were classic songs that appeared in successful movies. One re-recording was made of the classic James Bond theme "Goldfinger", this is the fourth studio recording of the song by Shirley Bassey. No singles were issued form this album. Several TV performances were made by Bassey to promote this album and British television broadcast a successful commercial campaign. The album sold well across Europe and entered the UK Albums Chart, for a run of nine weeks, on November 11th 1995 and peaked at number 24.
ABOUT This Music Classic:
Just about anyone on this planet old enough to recognize singers and the songs they are known for knows that this one is the most closely associated with country & western legend, Ms. Patsy Cline. Her 1962 recording of this classic reached #2 on the Country music charts. Nelson wrote the song in early 1961; at the time he was a journeyman singer-songwriter who had written several hits for other artists but had not yet had a significant recording of his own. Cline was already a country music superstar who was working to extend a string of hits. Nelson originally wrote the song for country singer Billy Walker, but Walker turned it down and Cline picked it as a follow up to her previous big hit "I Fall to Pieces". The song was released in late 1961 and immediately became another huge hit for Cline, eventually becoming one of her signature tunes, and its success helped launch Nelson as a performer as well as a songwriter. This song as sung by Patsy Cline is #85 on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
Musically the song is a jazz-pop ballad with country overtones. The complex melody suited Cline's vocal talent perfectly and widened the crossover audience she had established with her prior hits. The lyrics describe the singer's state of bemusement at the singer's own helpless love for the object of his affection.
