Creatures of the Deep Sea: Short Nose Chimaera (Chimaeridae).
A video with music about the Short Nose Chimaera one of the most mysterious and intriguing creatures of the Deep. All footage is from NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research.
Chimaeras are an ancient order of cartilaginous fish and like Sharks
their skeleton is made of cartilage rather than bone.
They share a common ancestor with the Sharks that lived some 400 million years ago.
They are deep water fish adapted to life at depths between 200m to 2600m.
Some species do like shallower water.
Like Sharks they share the ability to detect their prey
using electroreception, sensing the electrical signals they give off.
The Chimaeridae, or shortnose chimaeras have a venomous dorsal fin spine for defence.
They inhabit temporate and tropical oceans.
They range in size from 38cm to 150 cm, depending on the species.
Instead of having the many replaceable sharp teeth like sharks do,
Chimaeras have three pairs of large permanent grinding plates.
They also have gill covers like bony fish have.
Males, like sharks are distinguished from females
by a pair of claspers formed from their pelvic fins.
But they also have cephalic claspers on their heads
possibly for holding the female during mating.
Like sharks they lay eggs in leathery cases.
