Laphroaig Distillery Tour - Stills

All distilleries know that the shape of their stills is one of the variables that affect the final flavour of their whisky. However over the years many, including some Islay distilleries, have introduced fewer, larger stills to increase productivity and to reduce costs. However if you're serious about your whisky this is something you'll never do. You lovingly repair your small old pot stills and when they are finally worn out you make an exact copy right down to the dents! So it is with Laphroaig.

Laphroaig's 'magnificent seven' stills are unique by virtue of their unusual flat sides & base

The spirit goes through two distillations. The first takes place in the wash still and takes the strength up to 22% alcohol; we call this the 'Low Wines'. We collect the low wines as it condenses and distil it a second time in spirit stills. The Spirit Stills take the alcohol content up to 68%. But the secret is where you make your 'cut'. This is the spirit that is finally going to become Laphroaig. We have the longest and latest cut in the industry as it is only this spirit we need for our unique flavour. Indeed it you taste this raw spirit you can already taste many of the characteristics that are so familiar to Laphroaig. But now it is time for the long sleep - maturation. This process adds about half the flavour to our spirit. All of it takes place in traditional Oak barrels.
