Tesla can do more than just manufacture electric cars. While Tesla has never had plans to join the aviation space, Tesla boss Elon Musk has long hinted at Tesla developing an Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing vehicle that’s capable of flying at supersonic speeds at high altitudes. Musk teased the idea of an Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing in an interview back in 2018, when he noted that “an electric plane gets more feasible as battery energy improves.” According to Musk, Tesla would need a battery of at least 400 -500 Wh/kg in order to make an electric car that can take off. The idea has largely remained a far-fetched dream because Tesla’s current battery has only a density of about 250 watt-hours per kilogram. Since then, the billionaire has been dismissive of electric flying cars, arguing that flying cars could cause more noise pollution in the urban environment. He argues that going underground with tunnels is a better idea for urban environments than going up with flying cars. Despite CEO Elon Musk being against flying cars, the investment bank believes Tesla has the engineering prowess to create an infrastructure to support electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, including landing pads and charging stations. Considering the synergies between electric vehicles, and battery technology, autonomous driving, and flying cars, Tesla’s involvement in the electric vertical takeoff and landing and urban air mobility sector would be monumental. The analyst believes the idea of Tesla developing flying cars is too strong to ignore.
