SANTORINI || Top Things To Do In Santorini || Oia Fira Imerovigli Akrotiri || Run Char
Here is my travel vlog from my recent trip to Santorini (August/September 2017)
Top things to do in Santorini:
(Oia, Oia's Amoudi Bay, Catamaran Island Tour - Santorini Sailing, Red Beach, Akrotiri Archaeological Site, Wine Tasting - Domaine Sigalas Winery, The Food!!, Imerovigli, Fira, Donkey Sighting, Pyrgos, Trails for Hiking & Running)
1. OIA
OIA (pronounced ee-ya) is probably one of the most famous villages of Santorini. With its breath-taking sunsets, spectacular views and maze of small shops, restaurants and cafes, OIA is a must-do if you're in Santorini. If you want to get a good sunset shot, get there a few hours early (at least), as the crowd for the perfect picture gets quite big.
2. OIA's AMOUDI BAY
It's worth paying this port a visit (despite the number of stairs to get there) for the incredible views and amazing food. You can ride a donkey down to the bay, but I'd advise against it as they looked so unhappy and tired :( It was incredible to see the striking red cliffs, topped with Santorini's Iconic white-washed buildings.
3. CATAMARAN ISLAND TOUR - Santorini Sailing
We did a full day catamaran tour of the Island (half-day is also available). It was a semi-private ride, with maybe 15 people in total, that provided unlimited food and drinks throughout the trip. The trip was extremely informative about the island's incredible history, whilst also allowing for plenty of relaxation time and swims in the sea. Towards the end of the day, the boat waits for the incredible sunsets before dropping us back onto the mainland.
4. THE RED BEACH - at Akrotiri
The red beach is a definite must if you're visiting Santorini. It's located near the village, and archaeological site, of Akrotiri. Getting to the beach is a bit of a climb down, so pack light and wear proper shoes!! At peak times it does get quite overcrowded, however, it's worth a drive there to see the red beach and cliffs.
5. AKROTIRI ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE - pre-historic town
Founded in 5000BC and destroyed by a volcano & earthquake in around 1700BC, this archaeological site gives a vivid insight into ancient life on Santorini. A really fascinating trip and only 12 Euros! It's situated right next to the Red Beach, so it's definitely worth a visit if you're in the area anyway.
6. WINE TASTING & WINE PAIRING - Domaine Sigalas Winery
Santorini has multiple vineyards and wineries scattered across the island. We went to Domaine Sigalas for a wine pairing lunch. The food and wine were both fantastic and it was interesting to learn about wine production in the area and the different local varieties. There are many tours to choose from, including private, semi-private and sunset tours.
7. IMEROVIGLI
Imerovigli (my all-time favourite place in Santorini) is filled with Santorini's iconic whitewashed buildings with sapphire domes, incredible sunsets and narrow crisscrossing paths. Imerovigli is home to many incredible restaurants, small shops, hiking trails up Skaros Rock and the best sunsets on the island.
8. FIRA
Fira is the captial of Santorini. Like most villages on the island, it's a vision of dramatic cliffs and pristine whitewashed buildings. Fira is home to the Archaeological Museum, several churches & monasteries, shops, bars, restaurants, pubs and cafes. It's easy to get lost amongst the narrow footpaths around the capital, but a fantastic way to spend a day in Santorini.
9. DONKEY SIGHTINGS
I saw donkeys on my run out of Fira. PLEASE DON'T RIDE THE DONKEYS!! They always looked miserable and tired. I often saw them standing in the blistering heat without water or shade.
10. PYRGOS
Pyrgos is the highest point of Santorini, with incredible panoramic views of the island. Pyrgos has traditional architecture, remains of neo-classical mansions, narrow winding paths leading up the hillside, small white and blue houses, galleries, vineyards, churches, and as always, breathtaking sunsets.
11. TRAILS FOR HIKING AND RUNNING
As I was in the middle of marathon training, I got up early each day to take advantage of the many trails around the island. The trails connect many of the large villages together and are easy to find/follow.
I hope you enjoy this vlog and if there are any places I've missed out, leave a comment below!!
