"To slay. To kill. It means being hard on the inside".
A character study of Buffy Summers from the television show "Buffy the Vampire Slayer".

So this wasn't supposed to be a video. It started out as a way for me to learn a new editing software (Adobe Premiere) for a freelance job. A freelance job I successfully completed back in February, thanks to Buffy Summers. It's funny- the the very first fan videos I ever made (back in 2004 at the age of 13) were Buffy videos. Fast forward 17 years (now a 30 year old professional freelance editor), I fall back on my beloved Buffy to help me out.

Speaking of falling back on Buffy- when the world shut down in March 2020, I was furloughed from my job for several months. Like so many others, I didn't know whether my job would still be waiting for me when this was all over. Thankfully it was- but the not knowing was unbelievably difficult to deal with day after day. Watching Buffy with my Mum kept me distracted and rescued me from my own mental heath. So here's my thank you to a show that got me through high school, that has always been here for me and was a godsend again in 2020. I may have seen it 30,000 times, but it still holds up. It's still the best show of all-time. And Buffy Summers is my favouite female television character of all-time.

Sadly calling "Buffy" my favourite show of all-time doesn't feel as good as it once did. As a long-time fan, the recent allegations Charisma Carpenter made against Joss Whedon are something I was already familiar with (rumors have existed about Carpenter's unceremonious exit since the show ended)- but to have them confirmed by Charisma herself (as well as corroborated and expanded upon by Amber Benson and Michelle Tratchenberg) was incredibly heartbreaking. I grew up with this show and it helped shape the person I am today. To learn that something I love so dearly was created in such a toxic environment for so many people...to be honest, it's hard to reconcile. That being said, to "cancel" Buffy now would be to belittle the contributions of every single person who worked on the show, including Charisma Carpenter, Amber Benson, Michelle Tratchenberg and everyone else who suffered abuse at the hands of Joss Whedon. Buffy is not Joss' masterpiece alone.
