Trying to catch ONE Pokémon on the Sterling Pinball Machine: IMPOSSIBLE

We found this Sterling Pokémon Pinball machine at the Next Level Pinball Museum. But here's the catch, it had just been used for a tournament all day. I am 99% convinced the owners cranked the difficulty to "Hardcore Mode" because we found 8 Pokemon and caught absolutely 0. The tilt was real.
Plot twist: I ran into the exact same machine at the Field Museum Gift shop in Chicago a month later. Played it, caught the first Pokémon I found! Have you tried it yet? Was it impossible or was it just the tournament settings?
