STATE DEPT ASSESSES MYANMAR TAKEOVER AS A COUP: The State Department has formally assessed the military takeover in Myanmar as a coup and is now reviewing its assistance to the country, officials said earlier today.

‘After careful review of the facts and circumstances, we have assessed that Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of Burma’s ruling party, and Win Myint, the duly elected head of government, were deposed in a military coup on February 1,’ the official said on call with reporters, the name by which the U.S. government refers to Myanmar. ‘We continue to call on the Burmese military leadership to release them and all other detained civil society and political leaders immediately and unconditionally.’ One of the actions the U.S. can take is reinstating sanctions on the country, a step Pres. Biden said in a statement released on Monday was being reviewed. Biden called the military takeover and detention of various leaders ‘a direct assault on the country’s transition to democracy and the rule of law.’ State Department spokesperson Ned Price is speaking to the press now.
