Nearly a year into the pandemic, COVID-19 is still raging. The virus has infected more than 55 million people worldwide, and caused more than a million deaths. Now, case numbers are rising again. That's because the weather has cooled, sending more people inside, where it's easier for the virus to spread. Plus, lots of restrictions have loosened as people yearn to return to regular life.

To stop the spread of the coronavirus, we have to refocus on basic safety measures: social distancing, wearing masks whenever we leave home, frequently washing hands, and staying home when we feel sick. Taking these precautions will help keep ourselves and our communities safe by flattening the curve.

There's good news: Encouraging results have come from vaccine trials, and scientists predict a safe and effective vaccine should become available in the coming months. But it will take a while for everyone to get vaccinated. And until then, we all need to stay vigilant.
