NY Daytime TV: 21 Serials Of The 1969-70 Season

Some serials had become so popular in the 60s that by decade’s end there were more of these programs broadcast than any year before or since. Includes Hidden Faces, which technically was cancelled a few weeks before the official Sept start of the season, and Strange Paradise which played for about a month on WNEW-TV.

This season was a turning point for the Roy Winsor programs Secret Storm and Love Of Life as he had given up his production house and CBS, unused to the hothouse of serial assemblies, struggled to keep the pair going for a few more years. His other enduring show, Search For Tomorrow, was safer as it was produced under P&G. Mod and titillating approaches to domesticity were tried in programs such as Where The Heart Is, Bright Promise, All My Children, and Love Is A Many Splendored Thing. All shows aspired to perform like As The World Turns, which enjoyed a 12th year of audience shares hovering around the 50% mark. But the networks were increasingly counterprogramming serials against serials rather than games or talk shows, so competition for viewers was heating. Shown with the Another World studio in Midwood and CBS Broadcast Center in midtown.
