A bioregional university for the AI century: a proposal for SOU

SOU is voting Friday on a new plan. The plan may not save the university. There is a better option.

This video makes the case that Southern Oregon University, in the middle of a fiscal crisis, has a rare opening to become something distinctive: a true bioregional university organized around five anchors and a unifying methodology that no public university in America has yet committed to as institutional identity.

If nothing else, it's a plea for the university to articulate a bold vision at the dawn of the AI Century, and avoid the "managed decline" narrative that is the alternative.

The Deloitte report on SOU's path to sustainability does not mention AI even once in 77 pages. In May of 2026, building a ten-year workforce strategy without naming the most significant technological transition since electrification is borderline malpractice. This proposal is the gap that omission leaves.

What happens at SOU on Friday is a test case. If a small public university can concentrate around bioregional applied practice and Applied Technology as institutional identity, the model travels to fifty other watersheds with universities just like this one. If SOU manages decline instead, the next twenty years are the legibility trap at planetary scale.
