Today we are going to talk about orthognatic surgery or in simple terms corrective jaw surgery. Now what is this surgery? This is a surgery where we make cuts on your facial bones mainly the maxilla and the mandible that is maxilla is the upper jaw and mandible is the lower jaw. So we make cuts on these bones and move these bones according to where we want to actually place it. Now this surgery is done for many reasons. One of the most common reasons is to improve your bite. Now some people can have a underbite, some people can have a overbite, some people can have a overjet, some people can have a gummy smile and many other jaw issues because of which their teeth alignment is not absolutely right in such scenarios. Most of the people go for something called as braces or orthodontic treatment but in a minority of these scenarios you might also require a jaw surgery to actually correct your bite problems. So this is one of the most common indications for corrective jaw surgery. Other than that we also see that in in some children the upper jaw is very very behind for example in children with cleft clip and palete in some children there lower jaw might be very small something called as Pierre Robin sequence or retrognathia. Now these people are also a candidate for corrective jaw surgery. In rare circumstances corrective jaw surgery is also used for cosmetic purposes where patients are not happy with the profile of their face and we need to make this finer adjustments in the upper and the lower jaw and perform corrective jaw surgery for them and more recently corrective jaw surgery is also used to treat sleep apnea or snoring. People with very severe sleep apnea and snoring who don't want to use a CPAP machine and continue snoring all their life they opt for corrective jaw surgery to correct their snoring and sleep apnea issues.
