Music Chat: Ormandy Celebrates Memorial Day
The Memorial Day holiday is a uniquely American celebration. In times past, it was known as "Decoration Day," referring to the ceremony of laying wreaths and flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers. That is what Charles Ives called it in his tone poem of that name, and it was as good as unknown back in 1974, when Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra made a superb recording of it.
