Paradise Dam's $2.4m blowout ‘barely raising a peep’ in the cities

Liberal Senator James McGrath says the decision to cut the capacity of the Paradise Dam in Queensland “is the greatest scandal", and the greatest infrastructure failure in Australian history.

The Paradise Dam in Queensland - which was constructed under the Peter Beattie government - is now in need of urgent repair.

The Palaszczuk government has decided to reduce the size of the dam, putting at risk hundreds of millions of dollars worth of investment which have made the region a significant fruit and vegetable supplier for Australian domestic markets.

Mr McGrath told Sky News host Peta Credlin if the Paradise Dam “were in the triangle between Canberra and Melbourne and Sydney, it would be on the front page of every newspaper”.

However, he said the debacle has “barely raised a peep” and suggested the Palaszczuk government is "hoping that we all forget about it”.

The projected negative economic cost of reducing the dam's volume is $2.4 billion dollars over the next thirty years.

Mr McGrath said an expert in the area of saving dams suggested anchors could be used to reinforce the dam wall at a cost of $25 million dollars.

The government needed to be held to account for the “real money, real jobs and real businesses that are going to hurt because of what Labor have done to this dam," he said.
