Closing in on the Shutter Planks - Episode 164 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

The gaps in Arabella's planking are getting much smaller... and soon they will be no more. We are pushing hard to close up the hull with Carolyn's help before she moves on.

The shutter planks are a pretty exciting part of the build. There are only two of them, and they need to be perfect as they will have to be a driven in to fit on the first try. In a way, this means there are tighter tolerances than we've had to deal with for previously installed planks. No straps for edge setting, and not a lot of room for error.

Simultaneously, we're doing small, but mightily important, tasks to set ourselves up for the next big things—most notably, the main mast build and the lamination of the cabin house sides.

The coming weeks are going to be pretty exciting as we close up the planking and put the finishes on the mizzen mast! Thank you for watching!

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built.
