Soldat je série, kde hlavním hrdinou je mladý poddůstojník Wehrmachtu Franz Hofbauer. Příběh se odehrává v květnu a červnu 1943 v Minsku, Oděse, ale hlavně v oblasti ruské Kubáně, kdy toto území je neustále pod útokem Rudé armády a banditů.
Poručík Braun a jeho muži se právě vylodili v Novorosijsku, kde je přivítal generál Ruoff a zranění vojáci v čele s majorem Ganglem.
Než se však stačili rozkoukat, zaslechli střelbu, nedalekou radnici totiž přepadli povstalci. U budovy již byli lidé Otty Ohlendorfa, velitele Einsatzgruppe.
Franz však i přes jeho nesouhlas se hrdinně pustil vpřed, aby osvobodil držené úředníky.
Po akci nakonec obdržel tolik vytoužené vyznamenání, železný kříž.

Franz Hofbauer, that is the name of Petty Officer of the Wehrmacht, the protagonist of the Soldat series. The story takes place in the Russian Kuban area in May and June 1943, when the area is under attack by the Red Army and partisans.
Lieutenant Braun and his men had just arrived in Novorossiysk, where they were greeted by General Ruoff and wounded soldiers led by Major Gangle.
But before they could look around, they heard gunfire as the insurgents stormed the nearby town hall. The men of Otto Ohlendorf, the commander of the Einsatzgruppe, were already near the building.
However, despite Ohlendorf's disapproval, Franz heroically rushed forward to free the detained officials.
After the event, he finally received the much-desired award, the Iron Cross.
