This Man is the REAL Forrest Gump!

Due to its magnificent rating of 8.8, Forrest Gump has rightly been given a spot on the IMDb Top 20. It is an extraordinary film that compels viewers to empathize with a social outsider whose struggles are, in most ways, alien to the general viewer. More importantly, the film appeals to all -- it does not matter whether you like period dramas or science fiction, you will certainly fall in love with the good-natured simpleton named Forrest Gump.

Forrest Gump is the story of a lovable naif, raised by a single mother in the 50s Alabama. Though he has a low IQ of 75, his vision and understanding of the world around him is far clearer than that of even the wisest people. Unfortunately, Gump's child-like innocence and his uniqueness attract attention and make him an easy target. One day, while running away from his bullies, Gump discovers his natural gift - his ability to go like lightning, a talent that wins him a football scholarship at the University of Alabama. After graduating from college, Gump joins the army.

While minding his business in life and focussing on overcoming his disabilities, Gump accidentally bumps into President Kennedy, John Lennon, Elvis, George Wallace, and Abbie Hoffman. These encounters in some ways provide a new lens through which the audiences can interpret the socio-political events that the world claims to have redefined history. However, when looked from the perspective of a man like Gump, they are a cartoon that goes in life's background and does not make much sense.

It was this simplicity with which Forrest Gump delivered enormous messages that makes the film so iconic. Tom Hanks delivered an Oscar-worthy performance and once again, won the love of his audiences. However, do you remember the scene when Gump receives the Presidential Medal of Honor award? Most viewers saw it just another scene from the movie but the shot tells us how Forrest Gump, the movie, was born.

Forrest Gump is loosely based on the life of Sammy L. Davis who served in the American army during the Vietnam War. In fact, the scene where Gump is shown receiving the Medal of Honor from President Lyndon B. Johnson was created by borrowing the actual footage of Sammy receiving the Medal of Honor and superimposing Tom Hank's face on Sammy's face. In this video, we tell you all about the real-life Forrest Gump, the man who a Medal of Freedom for showing gallantry and intrepidity in the face of adversity.
