UP 1989 DRGW Heritage Unit Across The Royal Gorge Route

On April 11th, 2020, Union Pacific's Denver & Rio Grande Western Heritage Unit #1989 wound up in Pueblo, Colorado after delivering freight from Denver. In a surprise turn of events, the Pueblo Yard then had it assigned to lead the Martin Marietta Rock Train; jointly operated by Rock and Rail Railroad and UP. This train operates across D&RGW's Tennessee Pass Subdivsion through the Royal Gorge, as well as Northward over the Colorado Joint Line. We rose early on the morning of April 17th to chase this train from Parkdale to Pueblo-a GRANDE section of #1989's namesake paint scheme. In this video, watch as the train finishes loading at Martin Marietta's Parkdale Quarry. From there, the Rock and Rail crew gently leads the train onto the main and down the Gorge into Canon City. Our next/last opportunity for a shot is found off of Swallows Road, where the train wastes no time on its inbound trek to Pueblo. This was an extremely rare and fun chase. Rate. Comment. Subscribe.
