Deaf Film Director Develops App to Teach Basic NZSL

Jared Flitcroft is a filmmaker, a businessman, a family man, and he is Deaf. Despite being fluent in Te Reo and NZSL, Jared faced barriers in the largely hearing-led film industry where so much depended on him hearing and communicating with those around him. Undeterred, he began creating his own inclusive projects — his short film Tama achieved critical acclaim and Jared continues to make an impact on set with his hands-on directing style and contagious energy. Jared hopes for a future where NZSL is more widely used and is doing his part by developing Signergy, an app that helps others learn the basics of NZSL.
