He used his and others’ experiences in World War II to create James Bond, the central character in one of the most popular multimedia franchises of all time. This is Ian Fleming, the creator of Bond. Ian Fleming was born in 1908 to a wealthy London family. In 1939 he became the personal assistant to the director of naval intelligence. During the war, he worked with the Secret Intelligence Service and Special Operations Executive, helped create the CIA’s predecessor the OSS, formed an elite intelligence commando unit, and ran the intelligence operation Goldeneye. Inspired by his and others’ wartime experiences, including his step-cousin Christopher Lee, he created the character, James Bond. To date, the James Bond novels have sold over 100 million copies; and the iconic film series have grossed over $7 billion. Before he died in 1964, he wrote the children’s novel Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang, which was also adapted into a beloved film. Let us salute the man who created the cultural icon James Bond, the one and only Ian Fleming.
