5 with a Farmer: Doniga Markegard, Markegard Family Grass-Fed (Half Moon Bay, CA)
🌞 As a rancher and mom of four, Doniga Markegard says that her sunrise walks on the beach are an important part of her daily routine before she gets ranch chores going and the kids off to school. “Consciously seeking that connection on a daily basis enlivens the energy of creativity and love for the work I am doing." she says.
🐄 Doniga, her husband Erik, their four children and ranch hand Sue manage over 14,000 acres of grassland in San Mateo County, Marin County, and Sonoma County. Their homestead and primary operation is @markegardfamilygrassfed in Half Moon Bay, CA.
🌍 Having ranched for over 2 decades, Doniga says farmers need to "rethink everything. Farming would look completely different if we didn't focus so much on high profit and high yield commodity crops. Think about what the needs are of your community, then create a diversified farming system to support that."
🐺 Learn how Doniga's experience as a wildlife tracker got her into holistic management at the link in our bio and pick up a copy of one of her books, Dawn Again and Wolf Girl!
Over the past 10 years, Kiss the Ground, a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit, has become a leading voice in raising awareness for regeneration through storytelling, education, and advocacy. We believe regenerative agriculture is a viable solution to combat the climate, water, and health crisis.
