How to See the Tulip Fields in the Netherlands

How to see the tulip fields in the Netherlands 🇳🇱 ⬇️

When:

🗓️ End of March to mid May

We were there last week (mid April) and many tulips were in bloom but there were some fields that are yet to bloom

Where:

📍 Bollenstreek (aptly translates to bulb region)
This region is located in South Holland between The Hague and Haarlem and is less than an hour from Amsterdam.

🌷 This is the most famous flower region where you can find a great quantity of tulip fields as well as fields full of other flowers (daffodils and hyacinths)

🚲 You can drive around the area and see many flowers but we found the best way to get up close to the tulips was by bike. There is a 35km bike route (google Dutch flower route) which takes you around many flower fields. The route also takes you through an area of dunes and out to the coast. We thought it was a nice change of scenery but you can skip this section out to make the route shorter if you’re only interested in the flowers.

📍 Goeree-Overflakkee
This is an island located in South Holland, right on the border with Zeeland and less than an hour from Rotterdam

🌹 There are not as many tulip fields in Goeree-Overflakkee as there are in the Bollenstreek but we preferred this area because it was much quieter and we were able to be the only people at many of the fields. We found the biggest concentration of tulip fields around the town of Middelharnis

🚲 You can drive or cycle around the area. Again we found the best way to get around was by bike.

⚠️ Important - Look but don’t touch
Don’t be the people who trample through the flowers as this damages the bulbs. Yes you can get some great pictures and we would’ve loved to do it but remember this is the growers livelihoods and they need to be able to sell the tulips which they can’t do if they’ve been damaged by people walking on them.
