Hey, guys today i wanted to teach you guys a little about the origin story of graffiti and why cornbread / Philadelphia are completely irrelevant to the conversation. Now, a few things to clear first, we're talking about modern graffiti, not hieroglyphics and cave drawings, being a different convo. We also arent here to bash or belittle cornbread, i respect the work he's done, we're here for the truth and for facts and thats it. The issue with cornbread being the worlds first graffiti artist is the fact that it's simply not true, as he was predated by NY twice over, LA around the 40s as well, and gangs (if you consider gang graffiti to be the same as modern graffiti so that's debatable). If we want to we can also see examples of graffiti happening centuries ago and it was done in much the same way, where people in Rome not only in Pompeii but also in Rome in general, people made up names, got up illegally, and crossed one another out for the territory, just like modern graffiti. This same thing happened on the ancient Egyptian temples and tombs back in the 1800s. This means, when looking for when graffiti first started you have 2 options; those being, NY or, any of the previously mentioned examples that predate cornbread. Ny is credited for starting modern graffiti, spreading and expanding, while any of the others are considered the first instance.
