“Why do you have to be so mean Amanda? You may be popular, you may have the perfect body and a beautiful face, but you have the mouth of a monster!!”

“Ha ha ha ha”

I was so shy when I first started at my school, I didn’t talk to anyone at all. I remember the first morning as though it was yesterday. I found my classroom and took a seat at the back of the room, I was trying to act as inconspicuous as possible. I hoped by sitting at the back that no one would take any notice of me. But unfortunately my teacher wasn’t going to let that happen!

“Good Morning, you must be the new girl! Please stand up and introduce yourself to the class!”

My hands started shaking just at the thought of having to speak out loud to everyone. I could feel all their eyes staring at me, I couldn’t control myself any longer, I burst into tears and ran out of the room and into the bathroom.

I stood looking into the bathroom mirror, tears streaming down my eyes, suddenly the bathroom door opened and a girl my age walked in.

“Are you ok? Teacher sent me to look for you.”

I couldn’t speak so I just nodded.

“I’m Maddie, what’s your name?”

“A..A..Amanda.”

“Nice to meet you Amanda, why don’t you come back to class with me? We can sit together.”

I followed Maddie back to the classroom and sat down next to her.

“Don’t worry, I’ll be your friend, you don’t have to be shy.”

I gave Maddie a brief smile, she seemed really nice and friendly,

“Maybe things will be ok if I have her for a friend.”

When class finished Maddie asked me to go to the canteen with her,

“I don’t know why you’re so shy, you’re really beautiful, you have so much going for you!”

“Thanks, do you really think so?”

“Of course, you should have more confidence in yourself.”

I began to think that Maddie might be right, I should be more confident. Maddie and I became great friends, with her help and support I began to come out of my shell. It wasn’t long before the boys started paying attention to me.
