Understanding Joint and Sole Custody:

The term "Custody" can be used in two ways.

- It determines who is making the decisions related to your children. (joint versus sole custody)

- It outlines how much time the children spend with each parent.

Child Custody is based on the best interests of the children. If the parties can work together to make decisions affecting the children, then joint custody (joint decision making) makes sense. If there is ongoing conflict, then one parent should make the decisions so they have sole custody.

If the parties have shared custody it means that the children are with each parent about an equal amount of time.
