Can riding dirt bikes make you deaf?︱Cross Training Enduro

http://www.crosstrainingenduro.com http://tractionerag.com Can riding dirt bikes make you deaf? Ever had that ringing in your ears after a ride? Congratulations, that's the sound of permanent ear injury occurring. Many long term riders eventually get permanent hearing loss, or it's nasty cousin, tinnitus... persistent ringing, in the ears, or sometimes a clicking, buzzing, hiss, or roaring. Like hearing loss, there is no cure, only prevention and management. It's a bitch to live with. Riders who get tinnitus always warn others... do everything you can to prevent it. A loud motorbike exhaust definitely increases your hearing loss, but the research shows it is especially the wind noise as you exceed 70kmh. How much noise is too much? Research shows a mere 15 minutes on the highway with a standard full face helmet. The problem? Can helmets make a difference? Not a lot, but for road and adventure riders, it can help reduce noise by around three to five decibels. Schuberth, HJC and Shoei all claim to do wind tunnel testing. But they don't make dirt riding helmets so this is no help. The most effective solution is also the cheapest, starting at around $4. Ear plugs. These reduce noise up to a massive 32db. Potential problems? I can't find any research into dirt bikes. Usually dirt riders aren't doing highway speeds. But on the other hand, dirt helmets are much louder due to the emphasis on ventilation. And dirt bikes are usually a lot louder than road bikes. My educated guess? But who wants to hear about boring stuff like this? For many, the solution will be falling on deaf ears. They will say we've had an earful of safety vids already. It will be in one ear and out the other. Warning kids, don't attempt these lame jokes at home. So... can riding dirt bikes make you deaf? And like a bad smell at the dinner table, it's usually the wind to blame. If you ride motocross, you should definitely consider ear plugs. The same if you do a lot of desert riding or spend a fair bit of time riding in the higher gears. The rest of us? It's hard to know without any research into hearing loss for dirt riders. Safe riding, ladies and gentlemen! And try not to get hearing loss from dirt riding. There's a huge variety available, just keep experimenting. You can also get custom ear plugs designed specially for your mutated freak ears. Plenty of riders don't know how to fit the properly and they keep popping out. Google dirt bikes and hearing loss. There are also inflatable ear muffs for riders who really really hate ear plugs. But rough rule of thumb with dirt bikes and hearing loss is if your ears are ringing after rides, you should look into ear protection. You usually won't notice any long term effects from one noisy ride that leaves your ears ringing. But noise induced hearing loss accumulates over time. And so gradually you won't even notice it until it's really too late. Some riders find them too quiet. But you can get ear plugs that let enough noise through for safety but keep you protected. Some find them uncomfortable. I did find some solid research that confirmed it's not a good idea in very noisy unpredictable environments. Very keen to hear your thoughts and opinions, especially any auditory experts out there. Remember I always add further notes to the pinned first comment on Youtube. Or if watching this on Facebook, I'll add notes to original post. Swedish research showed a 10db noise reduction with ear muffs. Some riders listen to music with ear buds. If these don't seal external noise out, it's tempting to crank the volume to get over the wind noise. A seriously bad idea that will speed up your hearing loss. Remember having anything in your ears can be illegal in some states if you are on public roads. What about active noise cancellation? These auditory specialists don't recommend it.
