Painting Cotton Candy Air Plant with Escoda Ultimo Brush by Elisa Choi Ang
I enjoy sketching and painting on-location whenever possible. I do paint from photos when I'm inspired by the subject. My favorite things to paint are nature, architecture and vintage objects. For this demonstration, I'm going to show you how to paint the Cotton Candy air plant (It's a fast-growing air plant that produces a rose-pink flower when in bloom) using a size 8 Escoda Ultimo Brush.
I didn't do any initial sketch but dive in with directly with painting. I used more Lemon Yellow with a touch of Pthalo Blue for the initial layer. In watercolor, you always paint from light to dark.
To paint the leaves, begin from the tip of the brush then slowly apply pressure on the belly before lifting off from the tip of the brush to create a pointed edge on the leaf. It is helpful to hold your brush in an upright position first then bend it forward as you apply pressure. Observe how the leaves grow and paint from the center going out. Try to vary the size and position of the leaves.
I really like how the Escoda Ultimo Brush glides softly against the paper. It has a nice pointy tip that is so helpful in painting thin and small details. The size is versatile enough to paint quite big areas as well. I don't even need to switch my brush during painting!
Continue to build up the depth of the leaves by overlapping. Lessen the amount of Lemon Yellow on the Pthalo Blue to create a darker green. Leaves below is lighter than the leaves in foreground.
I used Cadmium red to paint the pot. Air plants can thrive without soil and they can be placed anywhere that provides good air circulation. I mixed Cobalt Blue, Burnt Sienna and a little Cadmium Red for the shadow inside the pot. I also paint the little spaces in between the leaves using the same dark colors.
I hope this inspires you to paint your favorite plant in the garden or find a plant that fascinates you. Apply some of the techniques in painting leaves in watercolor.
