Here's a simple solution to prevent maple trees from leaking sap around the tap. It only takes a minute to fix! Leaking spouts can be caused by debris in the hole, an oblong or oversized hole due to using a dull drill bit, not keeping the drill straight going into the tree, or simply not tapping the spout far enough into the tree.

I've seen some people recommend to just pull the spout out of leaking trees and leave it until next year, but you don't have to do that... the solution is simple and won't hurt the tree.
