Riding My Honda CB750 Cafe Racer Motorcycle Rebuild Project | Old School Motorcycle Clutch Fix | 35
Riding My Honda CB750 Cafe Racer Motorcycle Rebuild Project | Old School Motorcycle Clutch Fix | 35
In the last video after I had ridden my project Honda cafe racer CB750 I found that it still has a few issues. I am hoping to put some more miles on this bike this year so in this video I am attempting to improve the issues and ride it.
Things that I used:
Carburetor Synchroniser Gauges: https://ebay.us/g2cm5F
Motorcycle Auxiliary Fuel Tank: https://ebay.us/7aeVud
There are two main issues, and one that is probably needed because of these. The clutch is still slipping, and the engine doesn’t run particularly well, its idle is all over the place. So the third issue is the lack of a neutral light. The fact that the clutch slips and the idle being erratic makes it very difficult to tell if you are in neutral, leading to lots of stalling.
I thought I had found a solution to the clutch by adding one of the type B plates, cleaning the other plates, and using specific motorcycle oil. I had also changed the clutch springs to EBC heavy duty ones. Despite this it still slips which is very frustrating.
In this video I install new clutch plates from a top rated supplier, use motorcycle oil and try both sets of clutch springs. And despite this, the clutch is still slipping badly. It seems like the clutch plates aren’t being clamped firmly enough with either set of springs, so still allowing the clutch to slip. In the end I tried an old school bodge for clutches with very worn plates. I added an extra friction plate, which makes the clutch pack thicker. This seems to be working OK, but I am not at all happy with it, and it does seem to drag just enough to mess about with getting neutral, so I will be looking at it again soon.
The carbs came off very easily, and I have got quite adept at unhooking and rehooking the throttle cables. I know the carburation on this bike is going to be an issue, it has a virtually open pipe, and pod filters. This combination is renowned for being problematic on these engines. I also have the issue of ethanol in the fuel which when you leave it for a week or two seems to congeal in unfortunate places. I think it is ok just in the tank and float chamber, but in the small passages in the idle and slow running circuits it causes a problem when left. I was very surprised that all 4 of the pilot jets seemed to be blocked. It wasn’t debris when I poked the through, and I do have a fuel filter, so I am coming to the conclusion it is just the congealing fuel. I blew carb cleaner through all of the small passageways to make sure they were clear. I then bench set the carbs, ie making sure the slides all moved together. This isn’t as good as using synchronisers, but is a lot better than not bothering 🙂 The bike started really well, and overall ran OK. I need to put some more time into dialling the carbs in, before I can really tell, but it started and I rode it out and rode it home, so overall not too bad.
The final thing was to put lights at the end of the neutral and oil warning light. The switches were in place and all of the wiring was there to the front of the bike. I just need to add two lights with the appropriate connectors and they would work. I used two appropriately coloured lights and made a simple bracket for them. The do seem to work alright, but I am still a bit uncertain about the neutral light, as I think I could find neutral and it not come on, or I just couldn’t find neutral, it is hard to say, I do have a suspicion that the neutral I found might have been a false one, but with the reverse gear change it was easy for me to get confused.
One thing I noticed when just sat on the bike at stand still the oil tank gets quite hot against your right inner thigh, no wonder Honda puts a cover over them 😀
Well a couple of steps forward, but I do think I am going to have to take more than a couple back, but overall I am having FUN!!! I think!
