Learn more about the music:

Soumik Datta is a sarodi from the younger generation. He trained under the late maestro Buddhadev Das Gupta, flying to Kolkata for periods of intense study during his holidays from boarding school in the UK. Today he plays a vast range of styles - jazz, Indo-blues, drum’n’bass, and many more. But he always returns to his classical roots, performing traditional Hindustani music around the world to increasing acclaim. Rumour has it that he once turned down the chance to tour with Beyonce. Desh is intended for the second quarter of the night, with a form that lends itself to melodic sweetness. It is an audav-sampurna raga, ascending with five notes (SRmPN) and descending with seven (SnDPmGRS). Like ragas such as Miyan ki Malhar and Piloo, it ascends with a shuddha [natural] Ni, which becomes komal [flattened] in the descent. Re and Pa are the vadi and samvadi [king and queen notes], although musicologists disagree on which should be the stronger. Sitarist-scholar Deepak Raja also notes that “the chalan permits a judicious touch of the illicit komal Ga in the Taar Saptak [high octave]”. It is structurally similar to Carnatic Raga Kedaragaula, although in recent times has also been accepted into Carnatic music in its own right. Looser forms are popular in thumri [devotional song forms], and the raga’s name was even used as the title for an intensely patriotic 2017 military film.
