In a bold show of support at the United Nations, Russia has defended Iran’s actions in the Strait of Hormuz, a lifeline for global oil trade. During a high-level United Nations Security Council meeting on global maritime safety, Russia’s representative argued that Iran is within its legal rights to restrict shipping amid the ongoing conflict. The statement came as diplomats from dozens of countries gathered at the United Nations on Monday to demand the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, piling pressure on Iran to lift the blockade. Nebenzya reminded the UN of how European Union nations, particularly Belgium and France, have seized several Russian so-called "shadow fleet" tankers in the Mediterranean and North Sea, as of early 2026, amid the war with EU ally Ukraine.
