A Wuhan delivery worker ponders life’s agonies through poetry
At the height of the COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan, Zhang Sai was one of the many frontline migrant workers responsible for delivering essential supplies, risking illness and insults that are directed at most low-wage workers. While the super-exploitation of such workers in the modern capitalist landscape has only evolved during the pandemic, Zhang Sai’s story reminds us of the daily resistances and small victories which ordinary people caught in extremely difficult situations are always capable of.
Instead of romanticizing this small resistance as heroic, Jia Li’s film takes its cue from Zhang Sai’s own matter-of-fact perspectives on a world turned inside out, leaving breathing room for smaller hopes to emerge. During the pandemic, Zhang Sai finally had more time to journal and present his writings to a larger audience, something that was not perhaps available in abundance before. The fears and stresses of infection and making a living continue, but Zhang Sai’s love for poetry has only strengthened over time...
