Review: Charles Rosen Really Plays Modern Piano Music

This little four-disc set contains modern piano works by Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Carter, Boulez, and Webern, including two (count 'em) two splendid versions on Elliott Carter's Double Concerto for Harpsichord and Piano. Does one of them make more sense of this fiendishly complex music than the other? That's for you to find out. Let's just say it's better than the Boulez Sonatas Nos. 1 and 3--but then, what isn't? Listen, you probably know what you're in for, and if you don't, I can only say, "brace yourself and enjoy the ride." A fine collection by a major musician.
