We saw this pattern in fascist Italy. For years, many citizens supported Benito Mussolini despite repression and war. But when the economy collapsed, food became scarce, and everyday Italians started suffering directly, public support collapsed and Mussolini was ultimately turned on by the very people who once backed him.

The same political psychology exists today. Many MAGA supporters ignore the harm inflicted on immigrants, minorities, women, and democratic institutions. But when groceries become unaffordable, gas spikes, and their own financial security disappears, loyalty can evaporate quickly.

History shows a hard truth: political cults rarely collapse because followers suddenly develop empathy. They collapse when the consequences finally hit their own wallets and their own lives.
