Hurricane forecasts warn Jamaica to brace for Melissa’s fury

Tropical Storm Melissa is spinning in the central Caribbean and poses a serious threat to Jamaica, which lies nearly directly in its projected path.

Forecasters warn that the island could face prolonged damaging winds, life-threatening flash flooding, landslides, and coastal flooding starting Friday or Saturday, due to Melissa’s slow movement.

Hurricane models show the storm could pass south, over, or north of Jamaica, increasing uncertainty about the exact impact.

Meteorologists predict extremely heavy rainfall, with totals potentially exceeding 24 inches and localized amounts above 30 inches, the USA Today has reported.

Hispaniola and Cuba are also at risk as the storm continues to strengthen in the region.
