'Betrayal' Hiroshima reacts as Mayor Kazumi protests against US over 'subcritical' nuclear test

Crowds gathered at the Peace Memorial Museum in Hiroshima following the mayor's protest against a US “subcritical” nuclear experiment in Nevada.

Visitors observed a special display, including a clock reset to mark nine days since the last nuclear test.

Hiroshima's mayor, Matsui Kazumi, protested in a letter to US President Joe Biden.

The US National Nuclear Security Administration stated that the experiment, conducted on May 14, was part of efforts to ensure the safety and reliability of the nation’s nuclear arsenal. It is alleged to use chemical explosives to simulate conditions produced by nuclear reactions without an actual nuclear explosion.

Kazumi has called for a cessation of such tests, labeling them as completely unacceptable and a betrayal of atomic bomb victims.
