Free Orchestral Library Shootout (St. James Orchestra, VSCO, Alpine, Squidfont)
In this video we discuss and demonstrate four popular free orchestral/symphonic library options:
Versilian Studios Chamber Orchestra (VSCO -http://vis.versilstudios.net/vsco.html)
St. James Orchestra (http://freedrumkits.net/sound-fonts/st-james-orchestra/)
Squidfont Orchestral Soundfont (http://soundfonts.darkesword.com/)
The Alpine Project (http://alpineproject.wixsite.com/main/about)
A short, original piece of music was composed for each library (1-2 minutes each), with focus on getting the "best" sound out of each one. Each library is then compared and contrasted (with a little bit of opinion thrown in). Lastly, a fifth "hybrid" piece was created to see if the summation of all libraries would be better than the individual libraries - SPOILER ALERT: it is.
SAFE Reverb (a free VST) was used on all but one of the examples. You can get it here: http://www.semanticaudio.co.uk/projects/download/
