Capacity Testing LFP Cells from an old EV (Lithium Batteries)
I recently pulled LFP (lithium iron phosphate) cells from an old EV. The car was converted 8 or 9 years ago and the cells were in rough shape. Most of the cells were below 1.0 volt! That's not good.
For the past month I have been very slowly charging each cell. I used a buck converter from a 12v battery to charge the dead cells one at a time. I used constant current of 0.1 amp. This took a long time. Once all the cells were at 2.5 volts I then paralleled the cells and finished charging to about 3.3 volts. My goal was roughly 80% capacity.
In this video I'm utilizing an iCharger X8 to do a capacity test. This means setting up the iCharger into "regen" mode, which allows for 30 amp discharge. If you want more info on how to set up this mode I recommend checking out this video from Lithium Solar: https://youtu.be/sCYv1OPGhSc
