As we made our way down the Oregon coast in Nov 2021, we camped at South Beach State Park for a few days. This is the third time we have enjoyed the park. Campsites are reasonably spacious with paved pads and water and electric service. Cost in the low 30 dollar range per night.
The campground is located about a 1/4 mile from the beach in a forested area beyond the dunes. One highlight of the park is miles and miles of paved walking/biking paths.
In this video, I take you along on a bit of a day trip we did during a rare sunny, low wind November day on the coast. I decided to take advantage of the gorgeous break in the weather to visit a pair of attractions. Both gave me some spectacular views of the Newport coastal area from high vantage points.
First, we stopped below the Yaquina Bay Bridge, and I hiked across it using the pedestrian walkway. From the deck of this 1930s built bridge, you get panorama views of the harbor on one side and the ocean on the other.
Next, we head to the north end of Newport and visit the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area. It's run by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and features a 93-foot tall lighthouse built in the late 1800s. While at Yaquina Head, I give you views from a hike up to a viewpoint on Salal hill and down next to the ocean Cobble Beach and Agate Beach.
