Empowering Java Developers with Generative AI: From RAG to Responsible Innovation
This talk introduces experienced Java developers to generative AI’s transformative potential, focusing on practical implementation using modern frameworks. We will explore:
Basic and core concepts, such as LLMs, SLMs, NLP, RAG
Vector Datastore and Similarity Searches
AI Agents and Multi-Agentic Workflows
We'll then look at some of the more popular toolkits and frameworks that enable us to work with the LLMs and SLMs, and see a Spring AI or Quarkus/Langchain4j code example.
We'll also discuss the challenges with generative AI, and balance technical depth with ethical responsibility. Developers will be equipped to harness GenAI while addressing fairness, transparency, and scalability.
Mary's Speaker Profile
Mary is the Director of Emerging Technologies at Callibrity. With 25+ years of hands-on software engineering experience including development and technical architecture under her belt, Mary boldly entered the technical advocacy and evangelization space, and discovered her true passion there. Mary enjoys working with people on all levels, and has been an international speaker since 2018 when working at IBM, and subsequently at DataStax, before joining Callibrity in 2024, where she can expand her advocacy work to the technical business community. She has spoken at major international technical conferences in many continents, including North America (GOTO-Chicago, JavaOne…), EMEA (such as the very popular Devoxx series of conferences, JCON in Germany, Devoxx Morocco...), and APAC (GIDS, JJUGs in Tokyo, GDG Hong Kong...). She has also appeared on a number of technical panel discussions and podcast/videocasts. She is also a very active technical community builder, and has been the President of the Chicago Java Users Group since 2020, the Chicago Chapter Co-Leads of the GenAI Collective, as well as AICamp.
