Todai-ji Nigatsu-do is one of the important halls of Todai-ji Temple, located in Nara, Japan. It is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

• Location: Zoshi-cho, Nara City, Nara Prefecture
• Founded: Around 752 AD by Jitchu, a monk of Todai-ji
• Current Structure: Rebuilt in 1669 (Edo period)
• Architectural Style: Features a stage-like structure (kakezukuri), similar to Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto

1. Omizutori (Shuni-e Ceremony)
• A famous Buddhist ritual held annually from March 1st to 14th.
• The Otaimatsu event on March 12th is particularly spectacular, where monks carry giant torches along the temple balcony.
• This ceremony has been continuously held since 752 AD without interruption.
2. Scenic View of Nara
• From the Nigatsu-do balcony, visitors can enjoy a stunning panoramic view of Nara City.
• The sunset view from here is especially popular.
3. Hidden Main Deity (Eleven-Faced Kannon)
• The principal statue is a secret Buddha (hibutsu) and is not open to the public.
• Despite this, it has been deeply revered for centuries.

Origin of the Name

The name “Nigatsu-do” means “Hall of the Second Month” because the Shuni-e ceremony (Omizutori) is held in the second month of the lunar calendar.
