Per essere felici dobbiamo accettare la nostra storia, cambiarla se necessario. Un'impresa impossibile senza uscire di casa, andare in mezzo al mondo e stringere amicizie pericolose: quelle che ci mettono in crisi e ci spalancano possibilità nuove. Nei romanzi questo accade di continuo, con un’intensità e una frequenza che sarebbe impossibile vivendo una vita soltanto: la nostra. Allora è a questo che serve, leggere: a diventare noi stessi grazie alle storie degli altri.

Reading changes you. How opening a novel can let you find your story.

To be happy we must accept our story, changing it if necessary. This is an impossible undertaking without leaving the house, going out into the world and making dangerous friendships: those that plunge us into crisis and open up new possibilities. In novels this happens all the time, with an intensity and frequency that would be impossible if we lived only one life: our own. So that’s what reading is for: to become ourselves thanks to the stories of others. Silvia Avallone è nata a Biella nel 1984 e vive a Bologna. È autrice di una raccolta di poesie, Il libro dei vent’anni, e di quattro romanzi: Acciaio (premio Campiello Opera Prima e finalista al premio Strega 2010), Marina Bellezza, Da dove la vita è perfetta e Un’amicizia. Acciaio è diventato anche un film, l’omonimo con Michele Riondino e Vittoria Puccini, e uno spettacolo teatrale della compagnia svizzera L’outil de la ressemblance. Infine ha ispirato una canzone di Noemi. Avallone scrive per il “Corriere della Sera”, “La Lettura” e “7”. I suoi romanzi sono stati tradotti in 25 Paesi.

Silvia Avallone was born in Biella in 1984 and lives in Bologna. She has written a collection of poetry, Il libro dei vent’anni, and four novels: Acciaio (which won the premio Campiello Opera Prima and was the runner up for the premio Strega 2010), Marina Bellezza, Da dove la vita è perfetta and Un’amicizia. Under the same name, Acciaio has been adapted into a film (starring Michele Riondino and Vittoria Puccini), a play (by Swiss theatre company L’outil de la ressemblance) and a song (on the album Made in London by Noemi). Avallone writes for "Corriere della Sera", "La lettura" and "7". Her books have been translated in 25 countries.
