Forestry Commission Scotland and Climate Change
To help to mitigate the effects of climate change, Scotland has a target of an 80% reduction in gas emissions by 2050, and forestry has a significant role to play in achieving that target.
Forestry can contribute through:
- Locking up carbon in growing trees
- Promoting the use of woodfuel and renewable energy instead of fossil fuels
- Promoting the use of sustainable timber in place of more carbon-intensive materials in construction
Forestry Commission Scotland, through a programme of reforestation, has set an ambitious target of 25% woodland cover in Scotland by 2050. This would lock up an additional 4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year - providing environmental, as well as economic and social, benefits.
