How Design Chose Me - Problem Solving & Aesthetics #design #interiordesign #shorts #problemsolving
How I stumbled into design.
*Spoiler* I am obsessed with problem solving.
I was working for a company that was spending millions on renovations.
Time after time, I’d hear them say things like
“I want the carpet to look like the one from this hotel I stayed at”
“This is a picture of the lobby, I want it to look like this”
The designers would do exactly what they said but they were still unsatisfied.
Something was missing and when I see a problem, I can’t help but want to fix it.
I sat in on one of these meetings and broke down what was missed between the lines.
There was too much focus on the aesthetic and not enough on the experience in the branding.
Using big named brands and aesthetics aren’t enough to make a space cohesive.
You have to pull in the intention, the policies, and the energy from the people that will be using the space.
After this breakdown, they put me in charge of running the designs and renovations in a managerial role.
6 months of teaching myself sketch up online, creating layout & design plans, and hand picking materials; I realized I had a knack for design.
From there, I decided to go off and do my own thing.
I loved the idea of having this kind of an impact with environments, energy, and people.
I thought, why not create impact while building something bigger for myself and my daughter’s future?
I've always been a combination of both,
The critical thinking, problem solving,
and
Ooohh that's pretty!
I didn’t choose design, it chose me.
